The Library

The library of Northeast Normal University that grew out of the Reference Room of NEU established in 1946 in Jia Musi. It was formally established in 1948 when the university moved to the Jilin city. In July of 1949, it was moved to Changchun with the university. On April 1st, 1950, it was changed into its present name, the Library of NENU.In October of 1958, owing to the change of the school's direct control, it was once again changed into the Library of Jilin Normal University. In 1978, the school was again under the control of Ministry of Education. In 1980, the Library restored its present name.

The Library of NENU is a large-scale library, providing teaching and scientific research with abundant documents and materials. It now has a collection of 2.3 million books, including 460,000 ancient books, over 2000 kinds of series of books, 5000 odd kinds of collection of poems and articles and more than 2000 kinds of local magazines. In the collection of ancient books, there are over 1200 kinds of rare books, 800 odd kinds of Ming edition books, dozens of banned books of the Qing Dynasty and nearly 100 kinds of handwritten copies. Among the books above, there are some fairly famous ones, such as Zhai Jinsheng's "Collection of Xueye Tang"Printed by mud letters, the refurbished edition of the Song Dynasty's "Wen Xuan" by Yuan's Jiaqu Tang of the Ming Dynasty and "The Eight Banner's Tong Zhi" of the palatial edition.The library also takes in the recently published set of photolithograph ancient books, such as "Wenyuan Ge's Complete Collection in Four Treasuries", "Abstracts of Complete Collection in Four Treasuries", "Collections of Complete Collection in Four Treasuries " and "Da Zang Classic". Now it has 400,000 foreign language books, including 120,000 Japanese books .Just after the university was established , the library took over part of the books of the Puppet Changchun University , Chang Bai Normal College and so on .

One of the characteristics of our library is that it has a large collection of the local documents of the northeast Part during the Japanese puppet regime. Now the library has over 1.15 million common Chinese books, with a systematic collection on many basic subjects such as Education,Language, Literature, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Biography. It includes over 10,000 kinds of periodicals in pre-liberation and a complete collection of periodicals published in the Northeast liberated area. In recent years, the library subscribes more than 30,000 books of over 10,000 kinds every year,over 3140 kinds of Chinese periodicals and 200 kinds of foreign language periodicals.

The new library covers a floor space of 24,600 square meters with 2,645 seats for the readers. It includes the First Chinese Books of Arts Lending Room, the Second Chinese Books of Arts Lending Room, Chinese Science Books Lending Room, Foreign Language Books Lending Room, Ancient Books Reading Room, Chinese Arts Books of Preserved Edition Reading Room, Chinese Books of Arts of Preserved Edition Reading Room, Chinese and Foreign Language Periodical Reading Room, Reference Book Reading Room, Newspaper Reading Room, Electronic Reading Room, Catalogue Retrieval Hall, Audio and Visual Room, General Book-Returning Office and General Advisory Station. Many kinds of equipment is provided for the convenience of the readers. The Jing Yue Branch of the Library of NENU, covering a floor space of 11,000 square meters,offers 1300 seats for the readers.

In the library, there are 8 departments and an office, the Vocational Work Department, the Collecting and Compiling Department, the Book Lending Department, the Periodical Department, the Reference and Consulting Department, the Computer Network Department, the Special Collection Department and the Technical Service Department and Office.The network and equipment of the new library will be greatly improved. It will contain 1237 laptop sockets, providing nearly 600 computers for the readers. Readers can get on the Internet freely with their lap computers. The main server and system software are renewed. The digital resources of Chinese and foreign languages are increased. The library is advancing towards the great goal of changing into the modern library.
