Founded in 1946, the Northeast Normal University was the first university set up in the northeast by the CCP. Despite hardships and changes, NENU has been shouldering the responsibility of providing the qualitied personnel for educational causes .Especially for the recent fifty years , NENU has provided educational circles and the other fields with 150,000 excellent graduates, for which NENU is honored as "the cradle of teachers".

Battles,hardships and changes, in history, enabled NENU staff of several generations to develop the spirit of being realistic and united.They are likely to bring forth new ideas and keep forging ahead. Besides they accumulate rich and generous cultural information. At this most important moment of the turning of the century , the new leading group guides the faculty and staff to grasp the opportunity, to reform with keen determination and to pioneer and keep forging ahead, which results in the unprecedentedly rapid development of the university, and make it become the key normal university under the direct administration of the State Ministry of Education, which is more competenter and stronger in school-running .

So far , NENU has formed a comparatively complete and comprehensive system of subjects and specialities ,and has developed superior subjects and specialities in domestic academic circles, represented by Biology, History, Chinese Language and Literature. Through the first period construction of "211 Project", some subjects and specialities have either achieved the dominant position, comparing with the same faculty domestic or developed their own distinctive characteristics. Presently NENU comprises 20 colleges and departments, 49 undergraduate specialities, 75 subjects that are authorized confer that M.A. degrees, 1 first-rate subject, 27 second-rate subjects confered Ph.D. degrees and 2 postdoctoral research station .Theory of Pedagogy ,World History ,Cell Biology and Ecology are classified as the key subjects of national higher learning. In 2002, NENU convened the conference on the development of subjects. Since then, the subjects -developing plan highlighting the improvement of academic level is carried forward in a down-to-earth manner.

NENU is now making great efforts to build the system for fostering talents in research-oriented university. In June, 2000,the State Ministry of Education ratified the trial running of graduate school, which enables NENU to become one of 53 universities that own the graduate school in our country so that it lays the foundation of the research-oriented university. The present total enrollment of M.A. candidates is 3000. According to "the Tenth Five-year Plan for NENU's Development", by 2005 the total enrollment will be 20000, including 14000 undergraduates ,5000 graduate students ,1000 overseas students.

In 2000, NENU further extended its campus ---built Jingyue campus in beautiful tourism scenic spot Jingyue, which lays the foundation for NENU's future development . Meanwhile, its facilities and infrastructure have been improved, several great projects have been completed successively and put into use.

A green campus presents itself before us, which both demonstrates its culture, history and refined modern taste.

In recent years, more and more students have been attracted to NENU. Graduates have been getting full employment. From 1998 till now, NENU's graduates employment has been in the top 10 among the institutions of higher learning under the direct administrations of the State Ministry of Education , which is superior among the normal universities and colleges.These graduates have been welcome and favorably commented for their high quality, solid knowledge, basic theory and thorough training .

NENU has a very promising future in the new century .It proposes the concept of "Respect -based Eduation", makes clear the immediate objective of "One characteristic, Three first rate" (the distinct characteristic of running the university, the first rate academic atmosphere, the first rate administration) the university will continuously adhere to the guideline of serving basic education, take education and teaching as "the basis of school setting", the scientific research as "the basis of school strengthing", the legal schooling as "the basic of school managing".Now it's on the way to a comprehensive research-oriented normal university which is superior in China and also draws considerable attention from the rest of the world.

You will prosper as NENU goes well on the track .We understand that the rise and fall of NENU touches the every heart of thousands of NENU alumni and a prosperous and renown NENU has always been the old dream of NENU alumni across the country. For the same reason, we students as well as faculties and staff of NENU go all out in every position .We hold the belief that with the trust and expectation of NENU, the 150,000 NENU alumni will spare no effort to march with time and transcend our limits. Dear Alumni, every progress of NENU is perceived in your eyes, Meanwile, we are proud of every success of yours. As fellows of NENU, we long for communication and cooperation.
